Graphology
Graphology is the study and analysis of handwriting to reveal a person’s personality traits, behaviors, and motivations.
What is Graphology?
Graphology is the analysis of pen strokes. It is a soft science based on years of study in spacing, form,
movement, and intensity (ductus and pressure). Each person deviates from the learned lessons of
handwriting. These deviations are individually chosen thus creating your individual personality. Like
your fingerprint or forensic writing characteristics can identify you as an individual, how you write can
identify your individual personality traits. This can be done with printed writing, cursive writing,
drawings, doodles, and numbers.
A Graphologist understands the concerted effort of different regions of the brain that it takes to make
the movements to produce handwriting. They understand the motivation and meaning involved in
making specific marks on paper. They have studied psychology, behavioral assessments, statement
analysis, and personality. And, they have learned Handwriting Analysis from a variety of schools,
sources, methods, and theories.
Uniqueness in handwriting is revealed in the subconscious clues left behind in a trail of ink as it is
executed across the page from the way the writer held the pen, formed the allographs, the pressure
exerted, and the words that it expressed. Written communication is more than just words on a piece
of paper, it is who you are: your personality; your experiences and traumas; your aspirations; fears;

Is Graphology a Valid Science?
Graphology is challenged as a “real” science. Therefore, it is not accepted in testimony by a court of
law much like a polygraph. However, graphology is a behavioral science that is prone to multiple
variants of the human subject. Psychology and Medicine are human and behavioral sciences that are
“practiced” because they do not have all the answers to the human elements. Yet, they do have
enough practice to correlate their findings or opinions to the evidence it supports just like
graphology.
A well-known personality test, Myers-Briggs Typology Indicator has been challenged by many in the
Psychology field, and is still the most widely used personality test in corporate hires. Due to the level
of accuracy, there is value. Completing a handwriting analysis in combination with a typology
indicator can give even more insight to your personality assessment.
Graphology has proven to be useful in jury screening, the testing of children and adults alike,
personnel screening, investigation, personal enlightenment, and behavioral profiling.
For the best handwriting analysis, it is contingent on anything that can affect handwriting. It is
important to share with your graphologist any recent history with: medications; alcohol; trauma; age;
health; sexual orientation; and, handedness. Some of these items are not differentiated in the
handwriting characteristics, but do help in the analysis of it.
