While typing on keyboards is convenient, research in neuroscience demonstrates that writing by hand activates the brain in ways that typing cannot. Movement, mental activity, and the genes involved in learning are interdependent. Longhand writing strengthens neural connections, enhancing areas of the brain involved in thinking, language, memory, and information management.
Dr. Virginia Berninger, Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Washington, explains that handwriting involves physical sequential strokes to form each letter, unlike the single key press used in typing. This process engages multiple brain regions, boosting executive functions such as planning, adaptation, aesthetics, and foresight. Writing by hand also enhances the distinctly human qualities of emotion and creativity.

Why Cursive?

In the mid-1700s, Benjamin Franklin required young men attending the Academy of Philadelphia to “write a legible hand.” Until World War I, many government secretarial positions were filled based on handwriting skill. The development of American penmanship, including Spencerian, Palmer, Zaner-Bloser, and later D’Nealian scripts, emphasized legibility and speed. Before 1940, most adults wrote in cursive, and many European countries still taught only cursive in elementary schools. Montessori education continues to introduce cursive to children aged 5–6.
When printing became widespread in American schools during the 1930s and 1940s, students who wrote exclusively in print often could not read cursive materials, leaving them unprepared for future careers. Educators a century ago already described the lack of cursive instruction as a “dumbing down” of the education process—a concern that is echoed by modern research.
Is Typing More Efficient?
Some argue that handwriting is slower and mentally taxing. However, studies by Dr. Berninger and colleagues show that students in grades two, four, and six write more words faster and express more ideas by hand than on keyboards. Similar results were found in studies conducted in the UK.
